Ushak

Description

Ushak rugs were some of the most popular designs created in the regions of western Turkey. These rugs were extremely popular beginning in the late 15th century and were favored by the Ottoman Empire and European nobility. The rich color palette used includes oranges, reds, corals, ivory, and blues. The use of such lush colors, and distinctive patterns influenced carpet weavings for generations.

  • Size: 4'x6', 5'x8', 8'x10', 9'x12', 10'x14'
  • Pattern: Central bold medallion with angular edges, a characteristic of the Heriz carpet
  • Foundation: both wrap and weft are of handspun cotton
  • Knots: Turkish knot is used, weaves are fine up to 170 kpsi
  • Pile: Medium, strong, rather brush-like wool pile is cut short
