“Unlike other terms that might be used to categorize art, Christian (or 'devotional') art is unusual in that it does not describe art of a particular period or region, but art for a range of purposes that encompass a variety of forms and styles” (Williamson 2004). Though the creators of these objects of sacred expression (typically anonymous) are socially viewed as “artisans’ or “craft-persons,” there is nevertheless a high level of technical refinement to their intuitively vernacular, work. The content of these paintings reflect various Christian icons cast in contexts as described in Biblical scripture. REFERENCE: Williamson, Beth. 2004. Christian Art: A Very Short Introduction.
