“Unlike other terms that might be used to categorize art, Christian (or 'devotional') art is unusual in that it does not describe art of a particular period or region, but art for a range of purposes that encompass a variety of forms and styles” (Williamson 2004). Though the creators of these objects of sacred expression (typically anonymous) are socially viewed as “artisans’ or “craft-persons,” there is nevertheless a high level of technical refinement to their intuitively vernacular, work. The content of these paintings reflect various Christian icons cast in contexts as described in Biblical scripture. These specific pieces are brush painted on hardwood from powdered pigment and gold leaf, integrated with egg tempera; varnish preserved. REFERENCE: Williamson, Beth. 2004.
