Milk Pail (Nyankole People, Uganda)

Milk Pail (Nyankole People, Uganda)

9 x 8 x 8 ″Hand crafted from a single, hardwood block.
This milk pail was constructed and designed by the agrarian, Nyankore People of the Republic of Uganda. For many in Central Africa, cattle herding was an essential aspect of life. Milk is a key source of nutrition and was collected in these uniquely shaped vessels, which also stored the milk until it was sold at market. This object features a narrow neck and banded body, with a lid made of tightly woven, plant thread. When the vessels required repairs, metal was often used to restore and prolong their function.
