Qum Carpet (People of the Islamic Republic of Iran)

W 3'-6" x L 5'-7"Hand woven of Kurk wool; Persian knot, extremely high thread countThis Qum carpet is designed and constructed by the People of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Persian culture is world renowned for its brilliantly conceived, textile artistry. The Qum carpet is marked by ornate floral patterning and intricate tendrils that predominate throughout. Marked by a central medallion, the piece features meticulously drawn, “boteh-i-miri” motifs and repetitions thereof, integrated with vase, cypress and hunting configurations. This object may also be interpreted as a “pictorial carpet” or “rug tableau.” That is, it is intended to be hung on the wall (or laid on the floor). The process of stylizing and preserving the form of such carpets requires a deep knowledge of craft as transmitted via oral tradition through centuries in Persian culture.
