Description
The theme of this piece is “The Hunt,” and was previously reserved for high royalty. Its integration of animal and floral patterns are so meticulous that they appear to be illustrated rather than woven. Despite the plethora of flora and fauna motifs, this carpet remains visually symmetrical. The animals in the field include: warring lions, tigers, rams, dragons, and deer. This piece is also known as a “pictorial carpet” or “rug tableau.” That is, it is designed to be hung on the wall (or laid on the floor). The process of stylizing and preserving the form of such textiles requires a deep knowledge of craft as transmitted via weaving tradition through centuries in Persian culture.
