Circle of Light: Mid-20th Century Levantine Mother-of-Pearl Inlay Wedding Chest

44 x 63 x 21 ″

This refined mid-20th century wedding chest, collected in Beirut and masterfully restored by NOA Living, is a testament to the enduring poeticism of Levantine craftsmanship. Carved from rich walnut and inlaid with natural mother-of-pearl and bone, the piece exudes quiet elegance, centered around a radiant circular medallion—a powerful symbol of unity, eternity, and divine illumination in Islamic art.

The central circle, encased in a floral mandala-like pattern, anchors the design both visually and spiritually. It evokes the sun or the Eye of the Divine, a sacred motif used across Ottoman, Persian, and Arab decorative traditions to represent completeness and cosmic order. Surrounding it, stylized vines, rosettes, and almond-shaped leaves unfold in symmetrical balance, referencing the garden of paradise (Jannah) and its associated blessings of fertility, beauty, and abundance.

Unlike denser inlay work, this design breathes through restraint and clarity, revealing a confident hand behind its layout—one that allows the warm tones of the walnut to interplay with the iridescent shimmer of mother-of-pearl. The decorative scheme continues across the lower apron and sides, where repeating motifs of seed pods and geometric forms invoke protection and cyclical renewal.

Historically, such chests served as bridal trousseau chests, safeguarding the bride’s most precious belongings and often passed through generations as heirlooms. Today, this piece has been carefully conserved by NOA Living’s Beirut atelier, ensuring the preservation of its original materials and soul, while restoring the brilliance of its surfaces for contemporary interiors and collectors alike.
