Uphiso: Beer Transport and Drinking Vessel (Zulu People, Southern Africa)

13 x 13 x 13 ″Hand molded of clay with amasumpa, ukufusa; wax finish; coil method construction. This stunning vessel is hand constructed of terra-cotta clay by the Zulu People from South Africa. The Zulu are noted for their long tradition of ceramics and pottery making. The vessel is marked by a long-necked spout at the top followed by groupings of rectangular patterns of raised, pyramid-shaped bumps on the vessel’s belly. The carved bumps serve both an aesthetic purpose and as a grip mechanism when pouring or drinking. The vessel’s shiny, polished surface is typical of Zulu pottery. This type of pot is employed for consumption of local beer and wine within domestic contexts and during various cultural enactments. Sold
